‘Going vegan’ was predicted to be the biggest food trend of 2019. Every time we went for breakfast, lunch or dinner in Amsterdam, we saw more and more vegan dishes on the menu. Because of this we tried some of those vegan dishes. This made us curious to try more of the vegan food in Amsterdam. It wasn’t easy for us to find a website that provided a clear overview of cool hotspots with vegan food on their menu. That is why we started our own journey.

Vegan Food Amsterdam Airport

During our holiday in Mexico, we stayed in the place Tulum. We read on different food blogs that Tulum had great vegan food. During our stay we enjoyed a lot of great vegan meals at different places one of the places that we really liked was Charly’s Vegan Tacos.

We had a great time in Mexico. During the long flight from Cancun Airport to Amsterdam, we started craving for a good vegan meal. Therefore we searched for a vegan place on the Airport. After searching for a few minutes, we found LEON fast food. They had fresh dishes with great local products. They also had Gluten free options. Whether you are a relaxed book lover or fanatic football player, the menu was created to ensure that everyone has vegan options to pick from. Our Vegan Breakfast at Leon was great!

Time for some groceries

Because of being away on holidays our next step was to buy some groceries for the coming week. It is true that seasonal vegan foods are expensive. This is because they require more time, energy and other resources to plant. Therefore, we want to share our vegan shopping tips with you guys:

  • Meat alternatives such as the brand Vivera are acceptable.
  • Shop Items when items are on sale.
Like every other supermarket in Amsterdam. Vegan Supermarkets in Amsterdam also have deals. The supermarket Vegabond, often has price reductions.
  • Cut down on processed foods.
The reason why processed foods are expensive is because of all the industrial processes involved. Focus more on whole and organic vegan foods such as fruits and vegetables. Also go for beans, peas, nuts and kale.

Now that you are prepared for doing some vegan groceries in Amsterdam hereby a shortlist of our favorite vegan supermarkets in Amsterdam:

  • The Ekoplaza

This is the biggest organic chain in Amsterdam. They offer guaranteed authentic and organic foods of high quality at affordable prices, so it really is a win-win situation for anyone who shops there. The Supermarket is also at the forefront of sustainability as they have an entire plastic-free aisle, where all groceries are packed in bio-degradable packaging. The Ekoplaza also have an online store where you can make orders for any organic products at your convenience.

As their name suggests, this is the hub of organic and vegan-friendly products in Amsterdam. They have a variety of organic options ranging from pastries to fine wines and fruits. They also have their own kitchen where you can enjoy hot sizzling vegan foods. The Supermarket also has weekly offers on various organic foods, which are a welcome respite for any vegan on a budget.

  • VegaBond

This vegan supermarket is located on the beautiful Leliegracht, in the centre of Amsterdam. This is also a great place for sweet cravings  – think of donuts, banana bread and raw carrot tarts. This place offers a nice spot near the window where you can enjoy the view of beautiful Amsterdam while enjoying your cake. The vegan supermarket offers a lot of vegan sweets to take with you.

Time to plan our Diner

Everybody likes a good burger, right? Same for us. Therefore, for dinner we will go for a tasty vegan burger. Where can you find nice vegan burgers in Amsterdam? A good question that we are going to answer below:

  • Roots

Roots has two vegan burgers on their menu. The first one is made from oatmeal, carrot and cumin, topped with lamb’s lettuce, tomato, cucumber and finished with homemade vegan mayonnaise. Then we have the last burger and that is a burger made of beats with quinoa and pumpkin, topped with fresh spinach and a tahini-orange dressing.

Location: Amstelveenseweg 164, 1075 XN Amsterdam

  • Vegan Junk Food Bar

The Vegan Junk Food Bar. One of our favorite place to eat. They have a big burger available called the notorious sumo burger. You will receive the notorious sumo burger with vegetable cheddar, fried onion rings, jalopeños and the original vegan junk food bar sauce.

Location: Staringplein 22, 1054 VL Amsterdam

  • The Dutch Weed Burger Joint

We really like the Dutch Weed Burger. This is one of the most famous Dutch vegan burgers.

Location: Nicolaas Beetsstraat 47, 1053 RJ Amsterdam
